Thype is a Thai keyboard for macOS and iOS. Type the way a word sounds - sawatdee - and it becomes สวัสดี as you go. No switching layouts, nothing leaves your device.

What it does
Type it the way it sounds
Spell a word out in Roman letters, however you would say it, and Thype works out the Thai. It splits your typing into syllables as you go, and still finds the word when a letter is off.
It reads the sentence
Thai has many words that sound alike, so Thype weighs each one against the words around it. หิว makes ข้าว the obvious next word, not เขา - and you never touch a number key.
Later words fix earlier ones
Nothing is set until you press Enter. As the sentence takes shape, Thype revisits the words you already typed and corrects the ones the rest of the sentence rules out.
Works in every app
On macOS it lives in the menu bar and follows you into Mail, Messages, Notes or your editor; on iOS it is a keyboard. It also completes Thai words as you type them, and turns an English word into its Thai equivalent.
Your own words
Add any spelling you like to your personal dictionary - names, slang, the way your friends write things - and Thype will remember it and the words you pick most often.
Stays on your device
The whole dictionary ships inside the app. No account, no server, no analytics, nothing sent anywhere - Thype has no networking code at all, so there is nowhere for your typing to go.

On your Mac
Download and drag to Applications
Grab the .dmg from this page and drop Thype into your Applications folder. It runs on macOS 13 or later.
Grant Accessibility access
Thype needs permission to read what you type and write Thai back into whatever app you are in. You grant it once in System Settings, and setup walks you through it.
Type the way it sounds
Space finishes a word, a number key picks a different one, Enter puts the sentence in. Nothing lands in your document until you press it.

Get it from the App Store
Thype is a free download for iPhone and iPad running iOS 16 or later.
Turn the keyboard on
In Settings, go to General › Keyboard › Keyboards › Add New Keyboard and pick Thype. Full Access is optional - it only lets the keyboard share your personal dictionary with the app.
Hold the globe key and pick Thype
Type the way a word sounds, tap the reading you meant, and press return. Your other keyboards stay exactly where they were.

Good to know
Do I need to know the Thai keyboard layout?+
No - that is the whole point. You type Thai the way it sounds, in Roman letters, and Thype writes it in Thai script. The iOS keyboard also has the standard Thai layout if you would rather use that.
Why does the Mac app need Accessibility permission?+
That permission is how an app can read what you type and insert text into other apps, which is what lets Thype work everywhere rather than in one window of its own. You grant it once during setup. It is also why the Mac app is a download from this site rather than a Mac App Store app - the store does not allow it. The iPhone keyboard is a normal App Store download.
Does it send my keystrokes anywhere?+
No. The dictionary ships inside the app and everything happens on your Mac or iPhone. There are no accounts, no analytics and no servers. The words you pick and any words you add are saved locally, and you can clear them from settings whenever you like.
Is it safe to use?+
Thype talks to no server at all - it contains no networking code, so nothing you type can leave your device even in principle. The Mac build is signed and notarised by Apple, and the iPhone keyboard goes through App Store review.
What does it cost?+
Nothing. Thype is free on both platforms: no price, no subscription, no in-app purchases and no ads. The app itself is proprietary - free to use, but not open source.
